Escola Bressol in Barcelona: Nursery Costs and Applying
Barcelona's municipal nurseries for ages 4 months to 3: how and when to apply, the 2026-27 calendar and fees by income, mid-year places and private alternatives.
The short answer
Barcelona's municipal escoles bressol take children from 4 months to 3 years, and you apply in a window of about two weeks in May: online pre-registration ran from 4 to 15 May in 2026. Fees are means-tested, and a third-party 2026-27 summary puts them at €51.50 to €406.85 a month with meals; outside the window you can join a waiting list for vacancies.
Your baby is eight months old, you are about to go back to work, and every parent you know keeps saying "escola bressol" and "preinscripció" as if it were obvious. It is not. The main application window lasts about two weeks in May, the fee depends on your income in a way nobody can explain at the school gate, and if you arrive in the middle of the year you are told to join a list. This guide explains what a municipal nursery is, when and how to apply, what it costs, how to get in mid-year and how it compares with private nurseries. Dates and fees change each year, so use it to know what to ask.
What is an escola bressol?
A public nursery for children from 4 months to 3 years, giving the first cycle of infant education. Barcelona City Council's leaflet says its network has more than a hundred municipal nursery schools, that they run from September to mid-July, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm with a free early service from 8 to 9 am, with shorter days in September and July and some groups with reduced hours. It adds that every nursery has its own kitchen. The leaflet is available in English, but its file dates from 2022, so treat times and details as a guide and check the current ones.
When do I apply?
In May, for the school year that starts the following September. The leaflet says nurseries hold open days in April and that families apply online (preferably) or at their first-choice nursery with an appointment in the first two weeks of May, approximately, then formalise enrolment in June. The 2027-28 calendar is not yet published, so use 2026-27 as the pattern. Betevé's guide to the 2026-27 calendar gives these dates:
- Eligibility: children who will be older than four months in September 2026.
- Open days: 7 April to 5 May at all 106 municipal nurseries, mostly in person.
- Offer of places published: 1 May.
- Online pre-registration, or in person by appointment at your first-choice nursery: 4 to 15 May.
- Provisional scored list: 21 May. Objections in person: 22 to 29 May.
- Tie-break draw: 29 May at 11:30. Definitive scored list: 1 June.
- Lists of admitted children and waiting lists: 10 June. Enrolment: 11 to 25 June.
The same guide says the city is adding 145 places for 2026-27 and expects the network to meet 71% of applications, up from 66%, which implies that roughly three in ten applications would not get a place. It does not say how applications are scored, including whether your address or padrón registration counts, so ask the nursery or the council.
How much does a municipal nursery cost?
It depends on your income. The council's leaflet says fees include schooling and food, are means-tested on a social pricing scale, can be estimated online and are lower for children aged 2 to 3. It adds that fees paid by families represent one in four euros of the real cost of the service. A third-party guide published on 29 August 2026 by Barcelona Urbana gives these 2026-27 figures and cites the council's consolidated regulation in the provincial official bulletin of 23 December 2025:
- Ten income brackets, assigned by the city using tax agency data and fixed for the whole school year.
- With meals: €51.50 a month in the lowest bracket to €406.85 in the highest.
- Without meals: €31.14 to €245.96 a month.
- Children in the I2 group (ages 2 to 3): schooling and early care are free, but meals are still charged on the social tariff.
- Discounts apply for large families, single-parent families, people with disabilities and siblings in the same nursery, with no amounts given.
These come from a secondary source, so check them against the council's simulator and regulation before you budget.
What if I arrive mid-year or miss the window?
Join a waiting list. The leaflet says that during the school year families can check vacancies and join the waiting list online or in person with an appointment, and that applications can also be submitted at the Institut Municipal d'Educació's citizen help point at Plaça d'Espanya 5. The council's contact for nursery questions is imebatencio@bcn.cat, and the information line is 010.
How does it compare with a private or international nursery?
Private nurseries set their own fees and calendars, so there is no single price. For a sense of scale, published 2026-27 nursery fees at international schools in our school fees guide include €4,150 a year for Nursery 1 and 2 at Agora Barcelona International School, €7,090 for Nursery 1 and 2 at European International School of Barcelona, whose own listing contradicts itself on the figure, and €11,454 a year including lunch for pre-nursery at Hamelin-Laie, against municipal fees of up to €406.85 a month with meals in the top bracket. Compare like with like: hours, meals, the age group and one-off fees differ.
How do I apply if I do not speak Catalan?
Use the English leaflet and the online route, and ask for help in person. None of the sources we read say which language municipal nurseries teach or speak with families, so ask at the open day, where you can see the nursery and its team. The Welcome Desk, a free service that helps eligible newcomers in English with registering and enrolling children in school, can point you to the right office, and our no-Spanish survival guide explains the padrón, which many public services ask for. Vaccination and health forms come up at enrolment, and our paediatrician guide explains how to get them sorted in English.
- Which language do the educators use with the children and with parents?
- How is my application scored, and does the padrón address count?
- What will I pay in my income bracket, with and without meals?
- What are the hours, and is there a reduced-hours group?
- What happens if I do not get a place: how does the waiting list work?
