Living in Barcelona Without Spanish: Problems and Fixes

Admin, doctors, school forms, movers and tax when you do not speak Spanish: what to do first in Barcelona, official free help in English and what things cost.

The short answer

You can live in Barcelona for years without fluent Spanish, but registration, health care, school and tax admin mostly run in Spanish or Catalan. Start with the padrón and the health card, use the council's free Welcome Desk, which helps in English, and book professionals we have checked offer English for anything that cannot wait.

Most people arrive in Barcelona meaning to learn Spanish and Catalan. Then work, the children and the effort of building a life and a community take every spare hour, and the language slips down the list. That is normal, and it does not have to stop you getting things done. This guide goes through the situations that catch newcomers out, from admin and doctors to school forms and moving house, and says what to do in each, where free help in English exists and what things typically cost. It is general information, not legal, medical or tax advice.

Why does learning Spanish keep slipping, and does it matter?

It slips because everything else is urgent, and it matters less day to day than it feels, but not nothing. You can shop, eat out and book English-speaking professionals without fluent Spanish. Official procedures and public services mostly work in Spanish or Catalan, though, so plan for help with those rather than hoping to muddle through. The council's registration page and its leaflet, for example, exist in English, but the counters and forms behind them may not. Learning is still worth it when you have time, and we cover free ways to practise below.

How do I do the admin if I cannot read the forms?

Do it in this order: register on the padrón, then apply for the health card. The council says registering on the padrón (the municipal register) gives access to public healthcare and basic schooling for children and is needed for most immigration procedures, and that you do not need regular residence status to register. You can go to any Oficina d'Atenció Ciutadana, call 010 or use the online procedures office. CatSalut then requires the padrón first for the Catalan health card (TSI), with your passport or NIE and a padrón certificate issued in the last three months. Apply online or at the health centre (CAP) for your address.

  • The official NIE fee is €9.84, a first TIE card is €16.08 and a TIE renewal is €19.30 (BOE, Orden PJC/617/2025). Anything above that is an adviser's service fee.
  • Barcelona's free Welcome Desk helps in English, Catalan and Spanish with registering, the health system and enrolling children, for people who move to the city to work, start a business, invest or study, and their eligible family. It is at Carrer de Roc Boronat 117 and you request an appointment through a form.
  • Not sure which document is which? Our newcomer glossary explains NIE, TIE, padrón and cita previa in plain English.

Read the newcomer glossary, compare immigration lawyer fees and see the official NIE and TIE fees if your situation is not simple.

How do I see a doctor or a paediatrician?

You have two routes, and you should not assume English in the public one. In the public system CatSalut assigns your health centre by home address or by free choice, and public paediatric care covers children up to age 14, according to a December 2023 report by 3Cat. We found nothing published saying staff at public centres work in English. The other route is a private doctor you choose yourself: published 2026 price guides put a private GP visit at about €60 to €120 and an online consultation at about €25 to €40. For an emergency call 112, and for health advice call 061.

Our guides compare the public and private routes, cover paediatricians and vaccinations and list the emergency basics. Browse English-speaking doctors and paediatricians.

What about the dentist, the physio and a therapist?

Describing a toothache, where it hurts or how you feel is hard in a second language, so these are worth choosing in English. Published 2026 ranges are about €50 to €100 for a dental check-up, €35 to €120 for a physiotherapy session, €50 to €100 for a session with a psychologist and €40 to €90 for one-to-one personal training. Osteopathy and chiropractic are not statutorily regulated in Spain, so ask about training and register membership as well as price.

How do school forms and the school run work without Spanish?

The Barcelona Education Consortium, run by the city council and the Generalitat, handles school places. The city's English-language welcome site explains that children aged 3 to 16 who arrive outside the normal pre-enrolment period, for example when a family moves mid-year, can apply online at any point in the school year. Places are granted only where there are vacancies, each child can have one application, the process is free and requests are generally resolved within about two weeks. The Consortium's own website is in Catalan only, but your browser can translate it, and in-person help needs an appointment on 012 or 93 551 10 00.

Every neighbourhood we cover has a starter pack with the local council office, health centres and markets: Gràcia, Eixample, Poblenou, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Les Corts, El Born and the Barri Gòtic, Sants and Diagonal Mar.

How do I get through the awkward chat with other parents?

Start small and practise somewhere low-stakes, because confidence comes from use, not from grammar. The Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística (CPNL) runs Catalan courses for adults, and its Barcelona centre runs conversation groups, writing workshops and reading clubs, plus a volunteer programme that pairs learners with volunteers for conversation practice. Check the CPNL site for current dates and any cost. A handful of phrases at the school gate, said imperfectly, tends to go further than silence, and nobody there expects fluency from a parent who has been here a few months.

How do I move house, fix the flat or find a gestor?

Get written, itemised quotes and ask what is included before you agree. For a local move, published 2026 guides put a two-bedroom flat at about €400 to €1,000, and the guides disagree, so compare at least two quotes. A plumber's urgent call-out is typically €40 to €80 before the work itself. A gestor for a self-employed person is typically €30 to €120 a month before VAT, with tax returns often extra.

Browse movers, plumbers and gestors, read our moving cost guide and moving price guide, the gestor cost guide, and check which kind of lawyer you need in our lawyer guide.

How do I know a quote is fair when I cannot haggle in Spanish?

Check it against published ranges before you say yes, then ask for the same job quoted in writing by a second professional. Our cost checker compares a quote with typical 2026 Barcelona ranges for over a hundred services and shows the sources, and our price guides explain what moves each price and what to ask. Ranges are market figures from published sources, not quotes.

How do I know a professional really speaks English?

Look for proof, not a claim on the door. We list a professional only after finding a specific, checkable sign that they offer service in English, such as a review that mentions it, their business name or their website, cross-checked against their real address. We do not test fluency, so when you book, ask that the person who will see you works in English. Read how we check every listing.
