The Barcelona Emergency Cheat Sheet (No Spanish Needed)

Save this: the right number or service for a burst pipe, a lockout, a power cut, a sick pet, a dental emergency and a medical emergency in Barcelona, in English.

The short answer

For a genuine life-threatening emergency, call 112, the number works for all of Spain and the operator will find you an English speaker. For a medical emergency that isn't life-threatening, call 061 (CatSalut Respon) instead. For everything else, a burst pipe, a lockout, a power cut, a sick pet, a dental emergency, this cheat sheet gives you the right category to search and the one phrase worth knowing before you call.

Something going wrong is stressful enough. Not having the Spanish to explain it makes it worse, and that is exactly the gap this page is built to close. Bookmark it, it's organised by scenario, not by profession, so you can find the right answer fast.

The two numbers that actually matter

For anything genuinely life-threatening, fire, a serious accident, a crime in progress, call 112. It is the single emergency number for all of Spain and the European Union, calls are free from any phone, and the operator can connect you with an English speaker. For a medical issue that needs urgent attention but is not life-threatening, Barcelona's own medical line is 061 (CatSalut Respon), the Catalan health service's dedicated emergency and advice line. Save both of these in your phone today, not when you need them.

Burst pipe or serious leak

A genuine emergency (an active leak near electrics, water you cannot stop, a flood affecting a neighbour below you) is worth paying the out-of-hours plumber rate for. Useful phrase: "Tengo una fuga de agua urgente" (I have an urgent water leak). Our dedicated guide covers real 2026 call-out and repair pricing.

Locked out

Being locked out is one of the most common reasons people search for help in English at odd hours, and also one of the easiest scenarios for an overpriced quote to slip past you if you cannot negotiate in Spanish. Get the price confirmed before the locksmith starts work, not after. Useful phrase: "Estoy cerrado fuera de mi piso" (I'm locked out of my flat).

Power cut or electrical fault

A total power cut affecting your whole flat, or any electrical fault near water, is worth an emergency call-out. A single dead socket or a flickering light can usually wait for a normal daytime appointment at the standard rate. Useful phrase: "Se ha ido la luz en el piso entero" (the power has gone out in the whole flat).

Pet emergency

Processionary caterpillars, a toxic food ingestion, or a dog that has simply stopped eating or moving normally are all genuine reasons to call an emergency vet rather than wait for a normal appointment. Useful phrase: "Es una emergencia con mi perro/gato" (it's an emergency with my dog/cat). Our dedicated emergency vet guide covers real pricing and the specific caterpillar-season risk in Barcelona.

Dental emergency

A knocked-out tooth, a dental abscess, or pain severe enough that you cannot wait for a normal appointment all count as a genuine dental emergency. A knocked-out adult tooth specifically has a real time window, acting within the first hour or so genuinely affects whether it can be saved, so this is one emergency worth not Googling in a panic first. Our dedicated guide covers exactly what to do and what it costs.

Need a pharmacy right now

Spain runs a rotating duty-pharmacy system (farmacia de guardia), so there is always at least one open near you, even overnight, organised by the Col·legi Oficial de Farmacèutics de Barcelona (COFB) through its official Farmaguia service. Any pharmacy's door will display the current duty pharmacy nearest to it, or check the official listing directly rather than an unofficial aggregator site. Barcelona also has seven pharmacies open 24 hours year-round, including on Rambla and Carrer d'Aribau.

Public hospital or private, for an urgent injury?

Every Barcelona public hospital has an urgencias (A&E) department that must treat a genuine emergency regardless of your paperwork status, though waits vary and the consultation itself is in Spanish or Catalan unless staff happen to speak English. A private urgencias department, at a hospital like Quirónsalud or HM Delfos, is faster and more likely to have English-speaking staff, but you pay directly unless your insurance covers it, confirm this with your insurer before an emergency happens, not during one. For anything genuinely life-threatening, call 112 and let the ambulance crew make the call on which hospital, do not waste time choosing yourself.

Not sure if it's 112 or 061?

If in doubt, call 112. The operators are trained to redirect you to the right service, including 061 for medical care, so you will never be wrong to start there. The one thing worth avoiding is hesitating because you are unsure which number is "more correct", every minute matters more than getting the number exactly right on the first try.

Common questions

What is the emergency number in Barcelona?

112, the single emergency number for all of Spain and the EU. Calls are free from any phone, and operators can connect you with an English speaker.

What is 061 for in Barcelona?

061 (CatSalut Respon) is Catalonia's dedicated medical emergency and advice line, for urgent medical issues that are not immediately life-threatening. For anything life-threatening, call 112 instead.

How do I find an open pharmacy at night in Barcelona?

Check the duty-pharmacy notice posted on any pharmacy's door, or the official Farmaguia service run by the Col·legi Oficial de Farmacèutics de Barcelona (COFB). Barcelona also has seven pharmacies open 24 hours year-round.

What should I do if I'm not sure whether to call 112 or 061?

Call 112. Operators are trained to redirect you to the right service, including 061 for medical care, so starting with 112 is never the wrong call.

Is there a time limit for saving a knocked-out tooth?

Yes, acting within roughly the first hour genuinely affects whether a knocked-out adult tooth can be saved, which is why a dental emergency is worth acting on immediately rather than researching first.
