Choosing a Removal Company in Barcelona: Quotes, Terms and Red Flags

How to compare removal companies and man-with-a-van services in Barcelona in 2026, what a quote must include, the Spanish moving words to know and how to complain.

The short answer

Get at least three written quotes for the same inventory, and choose a removal company whose quote names the company and its tax number, itemises the price with VAT, states the insurance and includes any street permit. Under Spanish consumer rules hidden damage must be reported in writing within 7 days, and in Catalonia every business must offer an official complaint form.

Choosing a removal company in Barcelona comes down to three things in 2026: picking the right type of service for your move, getting quotes you can compare like for like, and knowing your rights if something goes wrong. This guide also lists the Spanish and Catalan words you will meet on quotes and websites, because many of the best local movers advertise only as mudanzas.

Removal company, man with a van or van hire: which do I need?

The right service depends on volume and distance. A full removal company suits a whole flat or anything fragile, a man with a van suits a studio or a few large items, and van hire suits people who can lift everything themselves. Cuánto Me Cuesta (prices updated April 2026) gives a worked example of a 28 cubic metre move over 30 km: about 114 euros to hire a van for a day with fuel, against 428 to 605 euros for a professional estimate, before counting your own time or the risk of damage.

  • Removal company (empresa de mudanzas): crew, truck, packing materials, insurance options and paperwork. Best for full flats, families and international moves.
  • Man with a van (furgoneta con conductor, or portes): a driver and van, sometimes with a helper, usually paid by the hour. Best for small or student moves and single items.
  • International mover (mudanzas internacionales): handles customs paperwork, shared loads (grupaje) and containers. Needed for moves to or from the UK and outside the EU.
  • Relocation company: a different service that helps with housing, schools and paperwork. Some also arrange the removal, but most are not movers themselves.

What must a removal quote in Spain include?

You have the right to a written quote (presupuesto), and the company may charge for it only if it tells you first. The Comunidad de Madrid's consumer guide to removals, which sets out the national rules, lists what a quote should contain:

  • The company's name, address and tax number (NIF), and your details.
  • Collection and delivery dates and places.
  • The type and number of items, and whether special packing, disassembly or assembly is needed.
  • An itemised price including taxes, so you can see whether 21 per cent VAT (IVA) is included.
  • The insurance covering damage to furniture.

A signed contract should follow before the move, stating the company's liability limit, the total price and how to cancel. You can ask for an inventory of your goods before the move. Most companies prefer a home visit or a video call before giving a fixed price, and OCU advises getting at least three quotes because each company estimates the volume differently.

Is my furniture insured during a move in Spain?

Not fully, unless you buy cover. Habitissimo (updated 10 June 2026) notes that a removal company's compulsory civil liability insurance covers damage to the buildings, not your belongings. Under the national rules, the company's liability for lost or damaged goods is capped at 20 times the daily IPREM index per cubic metre of load space, which is often well below what furniture is worth. Bishop's Move, an international remover, puts all-risks cover at about 2 to 3 per cent of the declared value for moves to Spain.

What are the warning signs of a bad removal company?

  • No written quote, or a quote with no company name, address or NIF.
  • A price over the phone without any inventory, photos or visit, which can rise on the day.
  • Large cash deposits, or pressure to pay the full amount before your goods arrive. The national rules let you pay on arrival unless agreed otherwise in writing.
  • No answer on who arranges the street permit, or a van without a low-emission zone label.
  • Being told to sign the delivery note before you have checked your belongings.

What Spanish and Catalan words will I see on a removal quote?

Most Barcelona movers write quotes in Spanish, and some in Catalan. These are the terms that come up most often:

  • Mudanza (Spanish) or mudança (Catalan): a move. Empresa de mudanzas is a removal company.
  • Portes: small transport jobs, a few items or a van load, often by a man with a van.
  • Presupuesto cerrado: a fixed price. Presupuesto sin compromiso: a free quote with no obligation.
  • Visita técnica: the home survey before a fixed quote.
  • Embalaje and desembalaje: packing and unpacking. Desmontaje and montaje: taking furniture apart and putting it back together.
  • Plataforma elevadora, elevador or grúa: a lift platform or crane, used outside the building.
  • Guardamuebles: furniture storage, often offered by the removal company. Trastero: a storage room or self-storage unit.
  • Grupaje or carga compartida: a shared load with other customers' goods. Mudanza interprovincial: a move to another province in Spain.
  • Permiso de ocupación de vía pública: the council permit to park the truck.
  • Hoja de reclamaciones (Spanish) or full de reclamació (Catalan): the official complaint form.

In English, people search for the same service as removals, movers, removal company, moving company, packers and movers, house movers and, from Australia, removalists. Our removals and international movers pages cover all of these.

How do I complain about a removal company in Barcelona?

Record visible damage on the delivery note before you sign it, and report hidden damage in writing within 7 days of the move, excluding Sundays and holidays, under the rules summarised by Consumo Responde. In Catalonia, Decree 121/2013 requires every business serving consumers to have official complaint forms (fulls oficials de queixa, reclamació o denúncia). The company then has 30 days to reply, and if it does not, you can take the form to your municipal consumer office (OMIC) or the Agència Catalana del Consum. For money disputes up to 15,000 euros, the transport arbitration boards (Juntas Arbitrales de Transporte) decide free of charge, according to the Madrid consumer guide.

Common questions

How many quotes should I get for a move in Barcelona?

At least three written quotes for the same inventory. OCU found that each company estimated the same flat's volume differently, so comparing like for like matters more than the headline price.

What is the difference between a removal company and a man with a van?

A removal company provides a crew, truck, packing and insurance options for a full move. A man with a van (furgoneta con conductor or portes in Spanish) is a driver and van paid by the hour, better for small moves or single items.

What does presupuesto cerrado mean?

It means a fixed, closed price for the move as described in the quote. It is the opposite of an hourly or estimated price that can change on the day.

Is my furniture insured when I use a removal company in Spain?

Only partly. A mover's liability is capped at 20 times the daily IPREM per cubic metre of load space, and its compulsory civil liability insurance covers buildings rather than your belongings, so ask about separate goods insurance.

How long do I have to report damage after a move in Spain?

Visible damage should be noted at delivery. Hidden damage must be reported in writing within 7 days of the move, excluding Sundays and holidays.
