Moving Out of Barcelona: Removals to Madrid, Valencia or the UK (2026)

What removals from Barcelona to Madrid, Valencia or the UK cost in 2026, how UK transfer of residence relief (ToR1) works and when to book.

The short answer

In 2026 price guides put a Barcelona to Madrid move at roughly 500 to 1,700 euros and Barcelona to Valencia at 700 to 1,225 euros, depending on volume. Moving back to the UK, used household goods can enter duty and VAT free under HMRC's transfer of residence relief if you have lived outside the UK for 12 consecutive months, owned the goods for 6 months and get approval before import.

Moving out of Barcelona is priced the same way as moving in: by volume, distance and access at both ends. This guide covers the two most common routes for English speakers in 2026, a move to another Spanish city and a move back to the UK, with the customs step that most people miss. The Barcelona end still needs a street permit and a lift plan, so see removals by neighbourhood for that part.

How much does a move from Barcelona to Madrid cost?

Barcelona to Madrid, about 620 km, costs roughly 500 to 1,700 euros for a typical flat in 2026, but the price guides disagree. Habitissimo (updated 10 June 2026) gives 500 to 1,500 euros. Cronoshare (8 January 2026) gives a headline of 620 to 1,200 euros, but its own table by size is higher:

  • Small move, about 10 cubic metres or one bedroom: 300 to 700 euros (Cronoshare).
  • Shared load (grupaje) with flexible dates: 300 to 600 euros (Cronoshare).
  • Two bedrooms, about 20 cubic metres: 600 to 1,700 euros (Cronoshare).
  • Three bedrooms, about 25 cubic metres: 750 to 1,750 euros (Cronoshare).
  • Four bedrooms, about 30 cubic metres: 900 to 2,100 euros (Cronoshare).

Cuánto Me Cuesta (prices updated April 2026) puts moves of 200 to 500 km at 700 to 1,800 euros, using Madrid to Barcelona as its example. Because the ranges overlap so widely, ask each company for a fixed price (presupuesto cerrado) on the same inventory.

How much does a move from Barcelona to Valencia cost?

Habitissimo puts Barcelona to Valencia at 700 to 1,225 euros in 2026, and Barcelona to Bilbao at 600 to 800 euros. Habitissimo also gives a per-kilometre guide of about 0.50 to 0.80 euros, with tolls charged on top, and 30 to 50 euros per cubic metre for moves between provinces. Extras are priced separately: Cronoshare lists packing at 20 to 30 per cent on top of the quote, disassembly at about 15 to 25 per cent and a lift platform at 80 to 150 euros an hour.

How much do removals from Barcelona to the UK cost?

Most published 2026 figures are for the UK to Spain direction, and return moves are generally quoted on the same basis: volume, service level and dates. Bishop's Move, an international remover, gives a small part-load of about 5 cubic metres at roughly 650 to 1,250 pounds, and a full three-bedroom home of about 30 cubic metres at upwards of 6,000 pounds. A shared part-load can save 15 to 30 per cent compared with a dedicated vehicle, in exchange for less control over dates. Compare My Move (updated 14 October 2026) lists road freight at 3 to 4 days and part loads at up to two weeks.

Do I pay UK import VAT on my furniture when I move back from Spain?

Usually not, if you claim transfer of residence relief before the goods arrive. According to HMRC's guidance (last updated 12 November 2025), you can bring personal belongings into Great Britain free of duty and VAT if all of these apply:

  • You have been resident outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months.
  • You have had the goods for at least 6 months before moving.
  • You import them within 12 months of moving to live in the UK, and use them for the same purpose.
  • You get approval from HMRC first, using the online ToR1 form, and give the reference to your remover.
  • You do not lend, hire out, sell or give the goods away for 12 months after the move.

Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are excluded, and goods from a second or holiday home do not qualify. HMRC says you can list goods by group, such as books or clothing, without values or brands. If you are moving to Northern Ireland from Spain, an EU country, HMRC says no ToR application is needed. Without the relief you can be charged customs duty and VAT on the value of the goods plus shipping, so apply before the shipment is packed.

When should I book a removal out of Barcelona?

  • 8 to 12 weeks ahead for an international move, as Bishop's Move advises, and earlier for July and August.
  • 4 to 6 weeks ahead for a move within Spain, longer in summer when Habitissimo says prices for a one-bedroom move can be about a third higher.
  • 2 to 3 weeks ahead: submit the ToR1 form if you are going to the UK, and agree who applies for the Barcelona street permit.
  • 1 to 2 weeks ahead: book storage if your dates at each end do not match, and arrange a house clearance for anything you are not taking.

Leaving furniture behind is often cheaper than moving it a long way. See the house clearance listings, self-storage in Barcelona and how to choose a removal company. Prices and customs rules change, so confirm current figures with your remover and HMRC; this guide is general information as of October 2026, not customs or tax advice.
