Removals in Barcelona by Neighbourhood: Eixample to Diagonal Mar (2026)

What makes a move harder or dearer in Eixample, Poblenou, Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, the Born and Diagonal Mar in 2026: permits, lifts, access hours and the ZBE.

The short answer

In 2026 the neighbourhood changes a Barcelona move mainly through access: a street permit for the truck (about 15 to 30 euros a half or full day before the street factor of 1 to 5, under the council's tax ordinance), lifts too small for furniture, superblock and old-town access hours, and the low-emission zone. Eixample top floors without a lift and the narrow streets of the Gòtic, Born and Gràcia usually cost the most.

A removal in Barcelona is priced on volume, but the neighbourhood decides how hard the job is. In 2026 the biggest local factors are whether the truck can park legally outside, whether your furniture fits in the lift, which hours vehicles may enter the street and whether the van meets the low-emission zone rules. This guide goes area by area for the neighbourhoods we cover. For the price ranges themselves, see our guide to moving within Barcelona and the English-speaking removals companies across Barcelona.

What does the street permit for a removals truck cost in Barcelona?

Barcelona charges a street occupation tax for moves, set in Ordenança Fiscal 3.10, the version approved by the city council on 26 January 2024 for 2024 and later years. The tax is a basic rate of 0.4966 euros per square metre per day, multiplied by a fixed 30 square metres for a move (up to two vehicles), a use factor of 2.00 and a street factor. That works out at about 29.80 euros for a full day and 14.90 euros for a half day of up to four hours, before the street factor.

  • Street factor: 1.00 for the lowest street category, 1.25 where a street has no category assigned, then 1.75, 3.00 and 5.00 for the higher fiscal categories. A full day on a top-category street is therefore roughly 149 euros.
  • Half day: the ordinance counts up to four hours as a half day, and anything longer as a full day.
  • Vehicle types: the ordinance separates vehicles up to 3,500 kg with no external lifting gear from all other vehicles, and gives both the same 30 square metre basis.
  • Notice: Mudanzas Juan, a Barcelona removals firm citing the council's rules, advises applying at least five working days ahead. Ask your mover how much notice they need for your street.

The consumer organisation OCU, in a study republished in September 2024, put the Barcelona permit at 44 euros and advised checking it is included in any quote. Price guides from moving companies quote anything from 30 to 150 euros, which fits the formula once the street factor is applied. Ask your mover who applies, which street category your address is, and whether the permit is in the price.

Can a removals van just use a loading bay instead?

For most moves, no. According to the council's urban goods distribution page, Barcelona has about 10,000 loading and unloading spaces, normally reserved on working days from 8.00 to 20.00, and in the newer Àrea DUM bays the maximum stay is 30 minutes after validating through the SPRO app or by SMS. Thirty minutes is enough for a few boxes, not for loading a flat, which is why a full move usually needs the occupation permit.

Does the low-emission zone affect my move?

Yes, if the van has no DGT environmental label. The council's goods distribution page says the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona, which covers almost the whole city, restricts vehicles without a label from 7.00 to 20.00, Monday to Friday, with up to 10 special daily authorisations a year through the metropolitan ZBE register. Established removals companies generally run labelled vehicles, but a cheap van hire or an informal van service may not, so ask before the day.

Moving in the Eixample: lifts, top floors and the superblocks

The Eixample is usually the most demanding district for a removal because of its older buildings. The price site Cuánto Me Cuesta (prices updated April 2026) singles out high Eixample floors without a lift as the most expensive local moves in Barcelona. Many older blocks have small lifts that take boxes but not a sofa or a wardrobe, so movers bring a lift platform up the façade, priced at roughly 90 to 250 euros in the 2026 guides we compared.

  • Superblock streets: on the green axes of Consell de Cent, Girona, Rocafort and Comte Borrell, the council's design gives vehicles access at 10 km/h with priority to pedestrians, no straight-through driving and loading allowed but no parking. Confirm the current rules for your block with the mover.
  • Chamfered corners: the octagonal corners (xamfrans) are where many loading bays sit, which helps with short stops but not a full move.
  • Ask: will the furniture fit the lift, is a platform needed, and is the permit for the street or the chamfer?

Moving in Poblenou and Diagonal Mar: lofts, towers and the waterfront

Poblenou mixes new blocks with lifts, low-rise older houses and converted industrial lofts, so access varies more by building than by street. The district also has superblock streets with limited through traffic, so check that the truck can reach your door. In Diagonal Mar and Vila Olímpica, the high-rise residential blocks usually have larger lifts, which keeps platform costs down, but buildings with a concierge or a residents' community often expect you to book the lift and the entrance in advance. Ask the building for its rules before you confirm the date.

Moving in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi: houses, gardens and hills

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi has more houses and larger flats than the central districts, so moves there tend to be bigger by volume, which is the main driver of price. Streets on the upper slopes are steep and some are narrow, so ask whether the full truck can park outside or whether a smaller shuttle van is needed. Families moving between international schools often time the move for summer, which Habitissimo says can add about a third to the cost in July or August.

Moving in the Gòtic, the Born and Gràcia: narrow streets and access hours

The old town has the strictest access rules. The Ciutat Vella district's mobility leaflet for the Gòtic restricts cars and motorbikes from Monday to Saturday, 7.00 to 9.30 and 12.30 to 21.00, and on Sundays from 6.00 to 22.00, except for residents, car park users and authorised vehicles. Loading inside the neighbourhood runs from 9.30 to 12.30 and on the perimeter from 8.00 to 20.00. A 2024 council presentation for the Casc Antic, which includes the Born, gave different loading hours, so treat all of these as subject to change and ask the mover to confirm.

Many old-town and Gràcia streets are too narrow for a large truck. Movers then park on a wider street and shuttle goods in a van or by trolley, which adds time. Bishop's Move, an international remover, lists narrow streets needing a shuttle van among the main access costs for moves into Spain.

Les Corts and Sants

Les Corts and Sants are mostly residential grids with wider streets and more modern buildings, so access is usually simpler than in the old town. The same street permit, lift and low-emission questions apply. See the movers in Les Corts and movers in Sants.

What should I ask a removals company about my building?

  • Which floor, is there a lift, and what are the inside dimensions of the cabin?
  • Do you need a façade lift platform, and is it priced in the quote?
  • Who applies for the street permit, for which hours, and is the tax included?
  • Does the vehicle have a DGT environmental label for the low-emission zone?
  • Can the truck reach the door, or will you shuttle with a smaller van?
  • Does the building require booking the lift or the entrance, or protection for the lift and hallway?

If the move dates do not line up, self-storage in Barcelona can bridge the gap, and if you are coming from abroad, start with the international removals guide. The figures and rules here are general information as of October 2026; confirm current fees with the Ajuntament before you book.

Common questions

How much is the street permit for a moving truck in Barcelona?

Under Barcelona's Ordenança Fiscal 3.10 (2024 and later years), a move is taxed at about 29.80 euros for a full day or 14.90 euros for up to four hours, multiplied by a street factor from 1 to 5. OCU put a typical Barcelona permit at 44 euros. Ask your mover whether it is included in the quote.

Can movers use a loading bay in Barcelona?

Only briefly. Barcelona's Àrea DUM loading bays allow a maximum stay of 30 minutes on working days, validated through the SPRO app, so a full move normally needs a street occupation permit.

Why are removals in the Eixample more expensive?

Older Eixample buildings often have small lifts or none, so movers carry everything by hand or bring a façade lift platform, which 2026 price guides put at about 90 to 250 euros. High floors without a lift are the most expensive local moves in Barcelona.

Can a moving van enter the Gòtic or the Born?

Authorised vehicles can, at set hours. The Gòtic's published loading hours inside the neighbourhood are 9.30 to 12.30, and narrow streets often mean a smaller shuttle van. Hours can change, so confirm them with your mover.

Does the Barcelona low-emission zone apply to removal vans?

Yes. Vehicles without a DGT environmental label are restricted in the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona from 7.00 to 20.00 on weekdays, with up to 10 daily authorisations a year. Ask the company whether its van carries a label.
